₹6,000 Crore Investment for 570 MW Project

Adani Power, led by business tycoon Gautam Adani, has signed an agreement with Bhutan’s state-owned Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC) to jointly develop a 570 MW hydroelectric project.

The Wangchhu project will involve an investment of around ₹6,000 crore for setting up the power plant and related infrastructure. Work on the project is expected to begin in 2026, with a completion target of five years.

The project is seen as crucial for meeting Bhutan’s rising power demand, especially during winters, while also enabling electricity exports to India.

Strengthening Its Position in the Power Sector

Under Gautam Adani’s leadership, the Adani Group has laid out ambitious plans to expand its presence in the energy sector. The conglomerate has earmarked nearly $60 billion by FY32 for investments in power, particularly in renewable energy generation and distribution.

The group aims to increase its renewable energy capacity from 14.2 GW in FY25 to 50 GW by FY32. Its renewable arm, Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL), is already engaged in developing and maintaining large-scale solar and wind projects across the country.

Transmission and Capacity Expansion Plans

AGEL also plans to set up 30,000 km of transmission lines by FY30, compared to 19,200 km projected by March 31, 2025, in order to meet India’s growing energy needs.

Meanwhile, Adani Power itself will see $22 billion of investments by FY32 to raise its generation capacity from 17.6 GW in FY25 to 41.9 GW.

Currently, Adani Power is India’s largest private thermal power producer, with plants across Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Tamil Nadu. The company also operates a 40 MW solar power project in Gujarat.
